Hola Fahrenhistas,
There’s sadness in The Bunker this weekend after we heard yesterday that our favourite crime-writing cowboy Kinky Friedman has died at home on his ranch in Texas.
“The most dangerous thing in the world in the world is to run the risk of waking up one morning and realizing suddenly that all this time you've been living without really and truly living and by then it's too late. When you wake up to that kind of realization, it's too late for wishes and regrets. It's even too late to dream, so squeeze every last bit of juice from the lemon, every single day.” ― Kinky Friedman
It’s arguable that if Fahrenheit founder Chris McVeigh hadn’t gone to see Kinky play a gig in London in the early 1990’s there simply wouldn’t be a Fahrenheit Press, that’s how important Kinky Friedman is to us. It’s a complicated story that really needs to be shared after a few beers, but it is nonetheless true, and if you’ve ever enjoyed a single one of the books we’ve published over the years then without knowing it you owe The Kinkster a debt of gratitude.
It’s one of our greatest publishing regrets that our quest to publish Kinky’s books back in 2016 fell short at the very last hurdle. The books themselves are some of the finest crime fiction you’ll ever read and just imagine the fun we’d all have had with him in our gang.
Oh, and his music ain’t half bad either.
Not sure we’re really up to trying to flog you our books & merch this weekend, but if you fancy anything in our store we’ll give you 20% OFF if you use promo-code KINKY at the checkout as a small nod to the great man.
Okay, we’re off to smoke a cigar and raise a glass to The Kinkster, but let us share one last piece of Kinky wisdom that we hold close to the heart of Fahrenheit…
If you have the choice between humble and cocky, go with cocky. There's always time to be humble later, once you've been proven horrendously, irrevocably wrong.” ― Kinky Friedman
We kiss you,
xx
Hello from England. So very, very sad to hear of the death of one of the greatest crime writers of all time. Wonderful characters, great stories and a sense of humour that is unsurpassed in crime fiction. I think I’ve read just about all the books and only two weeks ago finished ‘Frequent Flyer’ for - I think - the fourth time. Very many thanks for letting me know of his death - much appreciate your update. Cannot write more as the Village Irregulars have a meeting at the Monkey’s Paw and Rambam, McGovern and Ratso all owe me a drink. We’ll raise a glass to salute the great man.
