Hola Fahrenhistas,
Around a month ago we announced the forthcoming publication of a 2 volume set of collected short stories from Fahrenheit legend Russell Day.
We noticed almost immediately that although pre-orders for Volume 1 were pretty much around the level we’d expect, the pre-orders for Volume 2 were much lower.
To say we were surprised would be an understatement so we decided to take a look under the hood to try and find out what was going on.
We undertook a market research project by contacting readers who had pre-ordered Volume 1 (but not Volume 2) and very simply asked them why.
The results were overwhelmingly conclusive.
Almost everyone we contacted (80% +) said that COST was the main issue - they could justify pre-ordering one book in a month, but 2 was a step too far. Many of you asked us why we had split them into 2 volumes in the first place and honestly, we didn’t have a great answer to that other than the stories divided nicely into 2 volumes and we thought the set of 2 would look pretty cool sitting together on a bookshelf.
Frankly, it’s one of those occasions where we got things totally wrong.
We got carried away and put our ideas of what would ‘look cool’ above the very real needs of our readers and for that we apologise - we momentarily got high on our own supply.
We’re big believers in the old saying “when in a hole, stop digging” so we’re holding our hands-up, admitting we got it wrong - we’ve listened and we’ve decided to switch things up.
Based on your feedback we’ve amended our plans and we’ve decided to PULL ALL THE STORIES TOGETHER AND PUBLISH THEM IN ONE SINGLE BUMPER SIZED VOLUME.
The resultant book will be quite a chunky beast but by doing it this way we’ll be able to bring down the retail price from £19.90 to £11.95 - A SAVING OF 40% for readers.
(FYI: Anyone who pre-ordered Volume 2 will be receiving a full refund in the next couple of days and we’ll honour the (much lower) price paid by everyone who has already pre-ordered Volume 1).
We’ve always said we’re a different kind of publishing company and that we’ve built a different kind of relationship with our readers - that means communication has to go both ways and this is an example of us listening, putting our ego to one side, and admitting that on this occasion, you got it right and we got it wrong.
The end result of course is that there’s going to be a very beautiful, very chunky, very comprehensive, complete collection of short stories by one of the very best practitioners of the art - AT A PRICE THAT READERS CAN AFFORD.
We’ll always do our best to listen, and we’ll always hold our hands up when we make a mistake cause that’s what good families do, right?
Now GO BUY THE DAMN BOOK, it’s chunky as all hell and it’s an absolute belter…
Have a great weekend.
We kiss you,
xx
